The Term IR is not the problem

Everyone is still reacting to the decision that Tony Rios the CEO of AVN made about the elimination of terms "IR" and "interracial" from the AVN publication and awards show. While I understand the sentiment behind the decision I believe it is an overstep and a over simplification of a problem that is far more complex than Mr. Rios has taken the time to analyse.

The term interracial denotes a difference in the types of individuals whom are taking part in a sexual act. There is nothing inherently wrong with that in and of it self. It recognizes whom both individuals are. and forces you to accept the fact that they are different. While I understand why some people would see the distinction as problematic with the potential for prejudicial treatment of people of color. If you take a step back and talk to people of color. They will tell you almost to a person that they are proud of who they are as individuals. The vast majority of people I know who share my ethnic background. (I am a black man by the way) will tell you we are Proud to be black and we never want to hide the fact that we are black. If you start taking away things that identify us as being black then you start to homogenize us and you start to take away our representation.

What needs to happen in society at large and inside of the SW industry. Is that Black people need to be treated fairly and equitably. full stop. You do not need to take away our representation in order to treat us fairly.

Another aspect of this story is the fact that Mr Rios talked about the demeaning aspects of Interracial, the playing up of the racial stereotypes and the fetishization of Black bodies in the adult film industry. And that those practices needed to come to an end. This sentiment I have a little more understanding of. because Historically speaking The sensational myth about the Black Brute raping the white damsel in distress has been the catalyst for a plethora of societal problems and racially motivated violence. One of the most storied cases of this circumstance is the Murder of Emit Till. A Young Black Boy from Chicago who was viciously beaten and mutilated by white men after Till allegedly whistled at a white woman in Mississippi in 1955. The acquittal of his killers sent shock waves through the United States and his death was part of the fuel that jump Started the Civil Rights movement.

Sexual stereo types and Racism lead to the horrific death of Emit Till.

That being said People must understand that consenting adults doing what gets them off behind closed doors Is not a general reflection on who they are over all as people. I as a Black man enjoy race play from time to time. Some of the themes of that race play are pretty extreme. That does not mean I am not proud to be a black man. I also love when a white woman talks dirty to me and talks about the differences of our skin tones while we are doing it. That is what gets me off. Does that mean I see my self as less than. I do not believe it does. nor does the adult content that i choose to consume. The Term Interracial is not the problem the mistreatment of black people and other people of color is the problem. And eliminating the term is not going to fix it.

  2. The real problem in the industry is the acceptance of discrimination against black men by female performers that do boy/girl. He does not want to address this because it's still prevalent with many of his friends in the business. The women should be able to perform with whomever they want but call out the companies that continue to hire them only then will we see change. The companies should be shamed for hiring performers that discriminate solely based on race. Porn is about fetish so to eliminate the term IR would damage the product for the consumers.
